Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 vs GTX 1070

There no doubt that Nvidia always come up with their “A” game when it comes to high end gaming and it's no different in their last release, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 and 1070, with revolutionary Pascal architect which is a major upgrade over Maxwell architect and it is capable of doing wonders for enthusiastic gamers.

In this blog we are going to cover both of them so you could decide which one of them can match your gaming needs.

Pascal Architecture

As we can see in the spec sheet both cards are based on Pascal architecture, in this Nvidia has shrinked down the processor from 28 nm to 16 nm which has enabled them to firm fit greater number of transistors, theoretically they say it contains more than 150 billion transistors! Making it the fastest and the most efficient Graphics Card ever. This technique makes it 2x faster than its predecessor Maxwell.

GDDR5X vs GDDR5

Although both GTX 1080 and 1070 have same amount of Graphics memory but they contain different type of vram, the latest technology i.e is GDDR5X is capable of higher bandwidth ( 56GB/s ), Better clock speed ( ~14 Gb/s ), energy efficient ( ~1.35 Volts) and its smaller and cheaper than GDDR5 vram type.

GDDR5 is relatively older technology which lacks behind on all departments compared to GDDR5X.

Capabilities

Gtx 1080

  • 4K gaming
  • Multi monitor
  • Virtual Reality (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive)

GTX 1070

  • 1440p gaming
  • Virtual Reality
  • 4K is not as good as GTX 1080

Gaming Performance

Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the most hardware Intensive Game.

The Frame rate by both Graphics Card are as follows:

Gtx 1080:

maintained 90+ fps and peaked 120 fps on several occasions.

Gtx 1070:

it wasn't so bad either, maintained respectable 80+ fps.

Keep in mind that 1080p resolution is being used in this test, Gtx 1070 will suffer greatly in 4K resolution.

Conclusion

Both Graphics cards perform extremely well and no doubt Nvidia has done a great job in terms of Performance. Though it all comes down to the consumer intent, what type of gaming are they going for, Gtx 1070 is great when it comes to 1080p and 1440p gaming, also it can handle VR while consuming less power while if you are willing to spend extra money to get the best experience in terms of 4K gaming and Multi Monitor setup then there is is no better choice than Gtx 1080.
